The tests consisted of a VoIP call and a videocall using an LTE mini-network; a video conference, and image and data downloads. Testing is aimed at helping to plan and define the future technical requirements for LTE, as well publicly demonstrating Telefnica’s commitment to innovation and place as a market leader.
The new technology, which is predicted to be the successor to mobile broadband as we know it, is being billed as the next big thing in telecoms circles, bringing as it does a potential tenfold increase in speeds. There is some question about when we’ll see those kind of speeds on the ground, though: Telefnica suggests that its demo indicates that real world applications could be just around the corner, but so far no-one has been keen to put a real time estimate against a real world roll-out of LTE.
