New Plymouth badminton trio dominate World Masters Games
New Plymouth players have set a mark in the recently concluded World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia last week. Playing against some of the world’s best badminton players, these players from New Zealand proved that they can use their badminton racquets well and eventually won their respective titles.
Husband-wife team Trent and Tanya Riddick and Denise Alexander clinched gold medals in the 35-40 age categories in the group teams’ event. The aforementioned players also got three runner-up medals in other categories, to reach a total of six medals for their achievements alone.
The New Zealand team had to overcome tough competition from Pakistan, Australia and even their own compatriots to make it as far as the finals.
The trio are just among the 28,000 athletes from nearly 100 hundred who participated at the World Masters Games, touted as one of the world’s most prestigious sporting event. The games were held at the Olympic Park, where the 2000 Sydney Olympics was held.
The winning players stated that they had a great experience throughout the competition and they got the chance to know other players from different countries. The World Masters Games features players that are at an older age. The average age of the players in the event reached 50 with the oldest competitor recorded at 101 years of age.
